RS Thomas, "Extraordinary man of the bald Welsh hills"

The poet RS Thomas, born in Cardiff in 1913, poet of rural Wales, God, and love.

In Wales there are jewels
To gather, but with the eye
Only. A hill lights up
Suddenly: a field trembles
With colour and goes out
In its turn…

(from The Small Window)

We met
under a shower
of bird-notes.
Fifty years passed,
love’s moment
in a world in
servitude to time.
She was young;
I kissed with my eyes
closed and opened
them on her wrinkles.
‘Come,’ said death,
choosing her as his partner for
the last dance, and she,
who in life
had done everything
with a bird’s grace,
opened her bill now
for the shedding
of one sigh no heavier than a feather.

(From A Marriage, an epitaph to his wife)

To mark the centenary of the poet's birth, Tony Brown and Jason Walford Davies created a volume of his Uncollected Poems. Poems once lost, forgotten, unearthed like buried Celtic gold.
