Information & question about Big Ben

After reading our file on Big Ben, Alan Monro wrote to us -

For a fuller history of "Big Ben" I would recommend (if you can find a copy) a book written by JOHN DARWIN. ISBN number 0-7090-2811-7 (My copy is signed by him.) Mr Darwin became resident engineer of the palace of Westminster. The book has a wealth of information and some interesting pictures. It has about 186 pages. Well worth hunting out.

On October 6th of this year, I was shown around the houses and noticed that all the large/ small clocks on the walls between rooms seemed to pulse every half second. I am not a clock or watch repairer, but I have an interest in clocks. As all the large/small WALL clocks seemed to pulse at the same time, I asked my guide, "Where is the master clock?" They had never noticed the "jumps".

Can anyone enlighten me? Is there a "Master clock" on the premises or where do they get their "Pulses" from?

We don't know. If you do, go to our post on Big Ben and let Alan and enlighten us. AWN Pugin designed St Stephen's Tower and Big Ben just before he died.
