On our way

Thinking of beautiful walks in Britain, some of them wild, many of them not far from a pub where refreshment can be found and all of them in need of protection -

I like the idea of three young men walking and singing their way round Britain today. I remember Thomas Clarkson walking and riding ten thousand miles for freedom. I think of William Cobbett, riding and denouncing 'the thing' - that state of affairs in which men used government to tax and exploit the powerless so the powerful could become rich. It may sound familiar to you today.

Eggardon Hill, Dorset, a place where Iron Age people gathered.

Baby badger. Robert Bryon's prose poem about the life we meet in the country is one of our favourites.

Twilight at Saunton Beach, where my co-editor, David Abbott, was recently surfing.

Places, histories, people. . .greatly to be loved, greatly to be defended.
