Help for heroes

I picked up my email at the Philadelphia airport and found that Howard Maunders of On this day had written to alert us to a story. Here it is -

Metropolitan Police Service officers wearing Union flags to support British troops were told to remove them because they were deemed offensive. (Who deemed them offensive? That would be an interesting story.) The officers defied the ruling, and continued to show the flag. There was quite a row.

Today Sir Paul Stephenson, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, intervened and said that "officers should be allowed to show their support for Servicemen". Presumably he meant servicewomen as well.

You might think they could wear the flag pins to show support for their country, too.

The pins are sold to aid a charity that supports wounded soldiers, Help for Heroes.
