Seeing Britain by train

Loch Lubhair, near Crianlarich

Tony Robinson's "top train trips" include The West Highland Line -

The West Highland Railway offers one of the greatest railway journeys in Britain, probably in the world. For the first few miles you travel alongside the River Clyde, with views across the Firth of Clyde to Port Glasgow and Newark Castle, not to mention the ancient capital of Dumbarton, with its castle proudly atop Dumbarton Rock.

But when you reach Garelochhead the water comes to a sudden halt, and from then on you’re surrounded by the magnificence of the Scottish Highlands. At Crianlarich the line splits in two; west for the port of Oban with ferry links to the Western Isles, north and you eventually arrive at Fort William and the magnificence of Ben Nevis, with its rolling glens, snow-topped peaks, and blue, pellucid lochs. There’s no point banging on about the glories of this railway. You get the picture – it’s unbeatable.

I'd like to take every one of Tony Robinson's top ten train runs.
