We expected it, but still. . .

This is painful.

MPs have rejected calls to hold a UK-wide referendum on whether to ratify the EU's Lisbon Treaty.

"The House of Commons refused to support the Conservative proposal by 311 votes to 248 votes, after a heated debate which lasted six hours."

We commend those who stood by their pledge to the British people, and voted for a referendum.

"The result means Parliament will now decide whether to ratify the controversial treaty, signed by Gordon Brown last December."

If they ratify, they will be in violation of the British Constitution and they will be held to account.

This is not the end.
