A duty that transcends party

The mass lobby will begin in a few hours. The British people will be trying, in their patient way, to remind MPs that they have duties that transcend their party and that should render them indifferent to their whips. The transcendent duty of every MP is to defend the liberty of the British people, which the Lisbon Treaty threatens.

"Constitutionally MPs are not delegates of a political party but representatives of their constituencies and the British people. The public trust is that they should represent the will of their constituents with the freedom of their consciences but always in accordance with the British Constitution. Thus the Liberty of the subject must always be upheld by Parliament. . .As Liberty has also made us prosperous, it is a practical policy.

"The primary public charge of our MPs is the defence of the individual subject's Liberty."
