Evelyn Glennie

Evelyn Glennie judges musical notes by feeling them through her feet and lower body and hands. Born in Aberdeen, profoundly deaf since the age of 12, she learned to play xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, and snare drums. She began by identifying pitches with her hands, feeling the vibrations in walls as her teacher played her notes.

She performs with other musicians and solo, touring the United States, Canada, and Japan. Like composer William Boyce, whom we write about below, she has never shown an iota of self-pity about going deaf. She has just gotten on with it.
