Green thoughts

Meanwhile the mind, from pleasure less,
Withdraws into its happiness:
The mind, that ocean where each kind
Does straight its own resemblance find;
Yet it creates, transcending these,
Far other worlds, and other seas ;
Annihilating all that's made
To a green thought in a green shade.

From The Garden by Andrew Marvell.

The poet did not have much time to loiter in the shade. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he defended the poet Milton from execution, wrote satires on political corruption that made Pepys's heart ache, and served in Parliament. He died honest and poor.

His green thought in a green shade is mine, is yours.
