For the sake of one man or woman

We were interested in the Russian response to the British Government’s expulsion of four Russian diplomats in response to what is apparently Kremlin-sanctioned terrorism in London – the murder of Alexander Litvinenko. The British Government had reacted forcefully to Russia’s refusal to see justice done. David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, said, “Murder does require justice”.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “I don’t understand the position of the British Government. It is prepared to sacrifice our relations. . .for the sake of one man.”

That is exactly the point. In Russia, and indeed most of the world, one man or woman is often sacrificed. In Britain, the Constitution was created to protect the life and rights of one man or woman from the government, be it our own or a foreign government. We’re happy to see this principle still carries some weight.
