A medical first - surgically implanting genes into the eye

The BBC reports that a team at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital has made the world's first attempt to treat a sight disorder by injecting working copies of a defective gene into the back of the eye. The working genes will allow the retina to detect light, and restore sight. The technique may offer hope to the many people who are blind due to a genetic disorder.

Researchers at the University College London Institute of Ophthalmology have spent spent 15 years developing the method. Time will tell whether the operation is a success. The delicate surgical operation was handled flawlessly.
