British composers poll well

The Classic FM poll of Britain’s favourite classical music puts Vaughn Williams at the top with “Lark Ascending”. There were over 67,000 voters. Inspired by George Meredith’s poem, Vaughn Williams composed it in 1914. Its first performance was in 1921. Vaughn Williams has another piece in the top ten, “Fantasia on a Piece by Thomas Tallis”. Number two was Elgar’s cello concerto. Elgar also had number 6, “Enigma Variations”. We were surprised to see three British composers (including Tallis) taking four of the top ten places and beating Mozart and Beethoven, et al. But who can resist that hopeful lark?
