A hero departs: Jack Byrne

Jack Byrne was one of the SAS ‘Originals’ who caused so much trouble for Axis fighter bases during World War II. Success was purchased at a high casualty rate. Byrne survived the mission to blow up ammunition dumps at Berka airstrip, but missed his rendezvous, set off alone across the desert, and was captured. Sent to Stalag Luft III in Poland, his third escape was the charm, and he managed to make his way to Danzig, then Stockholm, and then Achnacarry, where he received intensive re-training before landing with 6 Commando in Normandy. Wounded in the knee, and evacuated, he rejoined the Allies’ final push to defeat the Nazis in northwest Europe.

His obituary in the Telegraph appears here.
