Choosing freedom and democracy

Compass Magazine, which is delivered free of charge to targeted postal codes, was on my doorstep yesterday. What interested me this month was an article about the BBC poll, which we wrote about, that asked listeners to choose one of five selected acts of Parliament for repeal.

Listeners chose to repeal the Hunting Act (52.8%). Second was the European Communities Act (with nearly 30%). Politicians of all three main parties did not treat these views with much respect. Apparently they only applaud democracy when it produces the results they want.

However, as we have often pointed out, it is heartening that the British people still favour freedom and democracy, even though their elected representatives mainly do not.
