Attacking cancer cells with ingredient in jalapeno peppers

Nottingham University has released a study that

capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria - the cells' energy-generating boiler rooms.

. . . the family of molecules to which capsaicin belongs, the vanilloids, bind to proteins in the cancer cell mitochondria to trigger apoptosis, or cell death, without harming surrounding healthy cells.

The story is here. Researchers in America have also been investigating capdaicin to treat prostrate cancer. The Ingenious Timeline shows scientists developing 21st century cancer treatments on a range of fronts.
