Happy (Belated) Birthday to BBC

BBC Radio was launched on November 14, 1922. The total staff was 4, a figure that has now swelled to 26,000. The BBC was a privately owned company until 1927, when it became a state-owned but independent company that was to be "free from both political and commercial influence and answers only to its viewers and listeners".

The BBC continues to produce some brilliant programmes in cultural and scientific departments, among others. I was glued to the television during each episode of Planet Earth.

One viewer and listener with questions for the BBC on its birthday was the Ugandan-born Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu. According to the Telegraph, Dr. Sentamu asserts that Christians take "more knocks" than other faiths at the hands of the BBC. "We are fair game because they can get away with it. We don't go down there and say, 'We are going to bomb your place.' That is not in our nature."

The BBC denied bias.

We look forward to receiving a more detailed response to listeners' concerns.
